Dealing with human well-being of the body and mind is a speciality of the University of Bern with a long tradition.

Surgical instruments, like the Kocher forceps, developed by our Nobel Prize winner, Theodor Kocher, in the 20th century, are still widely in use in operating theaters around the world. The modern hip replacement became a reality due to the pioneering work of Maurice E. Müller, another professor from the past.

Today, the innovations continue.

ARTORG, a center for biomedical engineering, is unique in Europe for its focus on meeting unmet patient needs whether through artificial intelligence or AI or novel medical devices.

Switzerland's largest faculty of medicine is located here, which is held in high regard both nationally and internationally for its research and teaching and particularly in translational medicine.

Physical and mental health are also under the spotlight in disciplines such as sports science and psychology.

Animal health forms part of the mix with Vetsuisse - Switzerland's joint faculty in veterinary medicine - which is based in Bern and Zurich.
